Programme published and tickets on sale for EUROPA CANTAT
The international music festival EUROPA CANTAT, whose this year’s motto is ‘A Million Ways to Sing’,
has published its programme and tickets are now on sale at www.piletilevi.ee. The festival is held
from 27 July to 5 August.
EUROPA CANTAT is one of the biggest music events in Europe and it is the first time for Estonia to host it. The festival will draw thousands of singing fans and choral music experts from all over the world to
Tallinn, Estonia’s capital. The programme includes concerts and appearances by the The Swingles
(UK), Vocal Line (Denmark), Inner Mongolia Youth Choir and many others. There are also concerts
by the cream of Estonian groups – Estonian Voices, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, the
Estonian National Male Choir and Vox Clamantis.
The festival highlights include the Opening concert at Liberty Square in Tallinn’s centre, the
„Happy Birthday, Estonia!“ concert at Tallinn Song Celebration Ground and Arvo Pärt’s «Te
Deum» by a 300-strong choir and the National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the Grammy-
award winning conductor Tõnu Kaljuste. The Night of Choir in the courtyards of Tallinn’s charming
Old Town is also bound to be the high point for many.
The festival features ateliers for singers, a conductors and composers programme, seminars,
workshops and round tables, a training course for young event managers, showcases, concerts and
public sing-alongs. There is also the Music Expo where publishers, music event organizers,
organisations and other music industry professionals present their products and services and the work
that they do.
«EUROPA CANTAT is a music festival that gives you the snapshot of the state of play in the world’s choral
music. Choral singers come here not in order to compete but to learn the widest variety of styles in
choral music from leading conductors,» said Kaie Tanner, the General Manager of the festival team.
«Tallinn will also host international promoters and concert organisers, and we can show them the
outstanding work of our conductors, choirs and composers, and present the opportunities that we have
for recording and for organising choir camps and concerts. Our broad aim is to put Estonia firmly
and visibly on the map of the world´s choral music.»
The festival brings together more than 4,000 singers between ages 5 and 85 from 50 countries.
The international music festival EUROPA CANTAT was initiated by the European Choral Association. It
takes place every three years and it is one of the key events in the choral world. The first festival was
held in Passau, Germany, in 1961, and the previous one was in Pécs, Hungary three years ago.
EUROPA CANTAT XX TALLINN 2018 kicks off with the Opening Ceremony featuring The Swingles (UK) at Freedom Square in Tallinn’s centre on 28 July.
